About

Stephen is an opera singer and concert soloist. He began singing at St John’s College, Cambrige, where he was Deputy Head Chorister. He later went to Wells Cathedral as a Choral Scholar, and studied Music at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, and Voice at the RNCM, where he was a recipient of the Sybil Tutton Opera Award and the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust Award.

His operatic roles include Superintendent Budd Albert Herring, Sarastro Die Zauberflöte and Il Commendatore Don Giovanni. At Glyndebourne he has covered Antonio Le nozze di Figaro and Dottore Grenvil La traviata, and was the music cover for Harvéy The Wreckers in the work’s first ever staging in its original French language. At Grange Park he has covered the role of Tom Un ballo in maschera, and in 2022 he created the role of Beelzebub in Bertie Baigent and Joseph Winter’s adaptation of Paradise Lost.

In concert Stephen’s bass solos include Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle and Bach’s St John Passion and Magnificat. As an ensemble singer, he has performed a variety of works from Renaissance masterpieces, to Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (Bass III) and Gregory Maqoma & Thuthuka Sibisi’s contemporary piece, Broken Chord, which he performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

In 2024 Stephen founded Clandon Music Festival, as he wanted to bring more live music to the village in which he grew up. The Festival supports the local community by hosting high-quality concerts, which raise money for charitable causes.
